Junior Coaching

Overview

Royal Wellington is actively expanding the possibilities for junior golfers at the club. Juniors are quite literally our future! The following sections give a summary of possibilities specifically targeted at juniors.
The mission of the Royal Wellington 20 Under Junior Program is to increase junior participation at the club. This will be achieved by providing a socially welcoming environment that provides events and a formal structure so juniors have a voice at the club.
We’re working in 4 main areas:
• Instruction
• Events
• Social
• Giving Back

Group Coaching Sunday Mornings

Sunday morning group coaching is conducted by our very own PGA Professionals.
The groups are split into age groups so that kids get to learn and play in a fun environment around kids their own age. The coaching is games-based learning with motor skills and golf skills merged into enjoyable and strategic games that help the kids learn all the basics of golf while challenging themselves to compete tasks.
Classes are 45 minutes long and cover Driving, Iron play, Chipping, Putting and on course play throughout the program. Prices vary depending on term length.

9:00am – 9:45am (4 – 6 Years Old)
9:45am – 10:30am (7 – 9 Years Old)
10:30am – 11:15am (10 – 12 Years Old)
11:15am – 12:00pm (13+ Years Old

Holiday programmes

The club provides holiday programs every school holiday with either 2 or 3 day programs. We have many different activities involved to help the kids learn new skills and have a fun and enjoyable time.
Programs will vary depending on time of year and the weather conditions. Prices vary depending on program length.
Activities
• Driving Range
• Putting Games
• Chipping Games
• Tennis
• Swimming Pool (Summer time)

Sunday Playing Groups

Except for a short break in winter, we have a regular playing group that plays on Sunday morning. There is a 9 hole option on the Terrace course and 18 holes on the Heretaunga course. While we’ve had a break during winter we are looking to get this back underway mid-October.
The general idea here is to have a time when juniors know that there will be others to play with even if they turn up alone. This is a great way to meet other members. It also helps with the transition from the coaching programs into “live” play on the golf course.
Tee times will be reserved for the playing group.

Integration with New Zealand Golf

New Zealand Golf (and Wellington Golf is part of this) have created Futures Golf.  RWGC are fully supporting this initiative.

There is a series of tournaments (we host one of them) all designed with juniors in mind.

Futures golf provides a wonderful opportunity to enjoy 10 different courses throughout Greater Wellington.  There are both 9 hole and 18 hole options available.

Interclub

The club enters teams in several different levels of interclub competitions. There are 9 & 18 hole9- & 18-hole options grades available. Depending on interest, additional teams can be entered.

In the first instance, register interest in playing interclub or speak to our convener to get more information about what is possible.

Assistance with Clubs

The club has a great selection of golf clubs available both to purchase and to hire. We’ll also do trade-ins on these clubs when new ones are needed.
